Welcome to the November issue of the Patient Experience Research Centre, Imperial College London Public Involvement Newsletter.

In this issue we share upcoming opportunities to get involved in health research, as well as upcoming events which you might be interested in joining.

Opportunities

Have you experienced a chest injury?

Researchers from Imperial are looking for four adults with lived experience of care at North West London hospitals following a chest injury, such as a rib fracture, collapsed lung (traumatic pneumothorax or haemothorax) or lung bruising (lung contusion) to help shape a research proposal.

What is involved?

Up to 10 hours of your time until July 2025
attending online or in-person meetings.

Are you living with Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Join this online introductory meeting on Wednesday 4 December, 5pm - 6pm to hear about a new inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patient network.

Who are we looking for?

Anyone, 17 years or older, who:

has experience as a patient of IBD (Crohn’s disease, Ulcerative Colitis or IBD-Unclassified), &
lives, works, studies or receives care in North West London

Payment for time will not be provided for the introductory meeting, however, future network opportunities may be paid. To find out more and register, please visit the online form.

Become a Community Partner with the Imperial Biomedical Research Centre

We are looking for people who live, work, study or receive/d care in North West London who are passionate about sharing their valuable lived experience of health conditions to become Community Partners to help improve research and the health of the North West London community.

As a Community Partner you will be working with researchers and healthcare professionals who are part of the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (Imperial BRC), a collaboration between Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.

Community Partners are paid £25p/h for their time, plus reasonable expenses for public involvement opportunities. View the research areas currently looking for Community Partners, eligibility criteria, and how to express an interest, on our website.

Help shape the research of the Biomedical Engineering Theme

Researchers from the Imperial BRC are looking for individuals aged 17 years or older, who live or study or receive care in North West London, with experience of being a patient benefiting from engineered technologies such as:

surgery of any type
implants including joint replacement or pacemaker
medical imaging and other diagnosis tools
wearable devices including electronic patches

What is involved?

Up to 15 hours of your time until May 2025 to attend online or in-person meetings to share your views and shape the Theme's research.

Join a Parent Engagement Group for Neonatal Research

The WHEAT trial team is inviting parents of children who have experienced care in a neonatal care unit, to share their insights and experiences as parents to help improve neonatal care, ensuring the best outcomes for premature babies and their families.

What is involved?
Attending approximately three 1-hour meetings per year. (Please note this opportunity does not include reimbursement).

Navigating digital health: a new resource for the public

Healthcare is changing, and information (data) is more important than ever. Artificial intelligence (AI) is starting to help organise and deliver healthcare. But what does this mean for us, and how do we make decisions when these changes affect us? How can we influence what happens?

Navigating digital health is a resource for those already undertaking public involvement in health data research, or thinking about getting involved in it. The guide was created by a team at Imperial in collaboration with members of the public. It has been written for the public to use in any way that suits them; there are podcasts and animated videos, as well as text and illustrations.

Technology for Healthy Ageing

A team at the Helix Centre are developing a smart home and wearable sensor platform, co-designed with older adults to maximise their long-term health and independence. The platform and programme will be used by older adults to monitor their own health at home and help encourage healthy behaviours.

Research Champion Training Workshop: Introduction to public involvement in healthcare research

As part of north east London Research Engagement Network’s (REN) mission to increase diversity and inclusion in research, and to enhance researchers' engagement with underserved groups, Barts Health NHS Trust Research Engagement team are hosting a bespoke training session for aspiring Research Champions.

Their aim is to create a community of research-ready Research Champions who can apply their lived experiences and skills to a wide range of healthcare research topics. This half-day training session will help to build your knowledge of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) and other NHS research processes. The Public Involvement Marketplace allows you to meet researchers and find out about exciting involvement opportunities to embark upon your own research journey.

Light refreshments and lunch will be provided for all attendees. Please register your attendance in advance.

Have you or someone you love experienced a stroke?

For the very first time, the European Life After Stroke Forum have introduced a new abstract category designed specifically for those with lived experience of stroke.

Whether you are a stroke survivor, a caregiver, or someone close to a stroke survivor, this is your opportunity to share your insights and strategies with others.

Submissions are invited with the chance to present a 10-minute oral presentation or a poster presentation at the Forum taking place on 10-11 March 2025 in Prague, Czech Republic. Abstracts must be submitted by 15 November 2024.
